The Souvenir (2019) dir. Joanna Hogg

There is no doubt why Joanna Hogg’s semi fictionalized film is highly into my top 2019 year end list, there’s something raw into reflections and it is clear in mind that the vision of the director wants to convey is very timeless and delicate with full of past life lessons to use as a souvenir for a lifetime.

The Souvenir is a delicate hit at Sundance 2019 competing from the other official selections like Awkwafina’s breakthrough performance to a heartwarming Chinese family drama the Farewell, the powerful theme and naturalism of the Last Black Man of San Francisco, the vulnerability of Honey Boy and a lot more, yet the Souvenir stands out as being praised for its truthful acceptance of the past, the untold story a long time ago that is need to be unlock seems so vivid and so straight-forward but with delicacy, showing the memories of having a traumatic relationship that needs to be reflected with others.

Out of the movies that I’ve seen, I really have that soft spot in The Souvenir, it is truly a determination to showcase everyone the deceit façade of love and attachment that seems to go through many different ways.
